Efrem Siregar, CNBC Indonesia
09 September 2019 14:23

Here’s Why MiFi is a Perfect Solution for Getting Internet WiFi in Bali

Efrem Siregar

When traveling to Bali, one problem always bothers tourists: How can we connect to the internet? Mobile WiFi (MiFi) is the best solution to stay online.

Getting a data service network is a common issue for anyone traveling abroad. Foreign SIM cards are not valid in Indonesia, which makes tourists have to find ways to connect online.

Internet availability is rarely a main concern when planning a trip. People often think about tourist destinations instead of finding a way to stay online. But happiness and serenity are common things that are kept in mind when planning a vacation. You will want to take photos and videos to share on social media.

The problem starts when you first land in Bali. You pick up your phone and realize you have lost network provider. You have to look for ways to get connected to the internet before uploading photos or updating social media.

How to get an internet network in Bali for tourists

Aside from planning your itinerary, make sure you have an internet connection. Nowadays, almost all things can be done online. You can book hotel rooms, taxis, and meals through apps.

While offline activities are possible, Bali is not in the 80s-90s era where you can enjoy holidays without the internet, especially if you need to stay connected for work.

Buying a local SIM card

Using a local SIM card is a common way to get internet. Providers include Telkomsel, XL, Axis, Indosat Ooredoo. You must register your phone’s IMEI, and often provide passport/KITAS. SIM cards are often recycled, so data security can be an issue for foreigners.

Renting a MiFi device

MiFi is one of the best alternatives to receive WiFi internet in Bali. It’s practical, portable, and works like home WiFi. You can find MiFi rental services without buying a local SIM card.

Renting an internet cafe

Internet cafes are still available in Bali, but fewer than before. Examples:

  • Rumah Sanur Creative, Jl. Lake Poso No.51A, Sanur, South Denpasar
  • BaliGlobal Internet 2, Jl. Lake Batur Raya, Jimbaran, Kuta
  • Fortress Net 3, Jl. Komp. Sesetan Agung No.B2-6, Sesetan, South Denpasar

Using hotel’s free WiFi or free WiFi cafe

Free WiFi is available at hotels or cafes, but often slow. Suitable only for emergencies or quick messaging.

MiFi, internet solution in Bali for foreign tourists

MiFi is the best recommendation for staying connected in Bali. It works like home WiFi and can connect multiple devices (up to 5). It’s portable, easy to rent, battery lasts up to 15 hours, and provides 4G unlimited network speed.

How to rent a MiFi in Bali
